By the way, you can tell the difference between a strong opinion and a belief: If you can give up your idea when opposing evidence comes along, it's an opinion; if you can't, it's a belief.
I didn't accept TTOMTE without losing things important to me too. Certain friends and family members don't like to talk to me too much about these kinds of things, and if Christianity doesn't hold any truth at all, most of my choral music has become meaningless. Ouch. However, an atheist, of all people, lent some comfort: He said he still appreciated the Pieta by Michelangelo and the St. Mathew Passion by Bach. Beethoven was sorry he'd composed the Emperor Concerto in honor of Napoleon when the ruler became just another tyrant. However, the Emperor Concerto can stand on its own. In other words, one can still enjoy tradition and beauty even if the inspiration came out of mythology. Over a number of years, St. John's University, my alma mater, has been creating an artistic Bible with calligraphy from early traditions, and I think the book's quite beautiful.
